Vape Juice Expired? Here is What You Need to Know

Blog thumbnail in

With the growing popularity of e-liquids, there are numerous benefits to vaping. There are numerous flavors in e-liquids, and you can taste them in every drop. But did you know that e-liquids have a shelf life? We understand that, like the rest of us, you use e-liquid quickly, making it practically impossible to reach the expiration date – but what if you bought a bunch of various flavors or simply forgot about that extra e-liquid bottle you received a few months ago? So, does vape juice have an expiration date?

Every consumable item bears an expiration date, or “sell-by date.” As a general rule, it is recommended to vape them before this date. However, the goods do not go bad overnight.

What is the shelf life of opened vape juice?

E-liquid has an expiration date, and it isn’t just for show. Although both propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG) is responsible for the 1-2-year expiration date for vape juice, the majority of the changes in vape liquid are driven by nicotine oxidation and flavoring deterioration. The effects of aging vary depending on the liquid. Older e liquids typically have lower nicotine levels and weaker flavors.

What happens when E-liquids Expire?

Vape juice is made up of many different substances. Its elements begin to separate over time. Things separate naturally, which is why our bottles say “Shake Well.” However, if the vape liquid is too old, no matter how much it is shaken, it may not come together. There may also be crystalline debris that will not dissolve with heat or mixing. Vaping the e juice at that point would be a risk not worth taking.

E-liquids, especially those with nicotine, can darken over time. This is a common reaction. Nicotine oxidizes, which is a chemical interaction with oxygen that causes a change in form. During this process, it darkens, as does the vape liquid. If your vape liquid turns much darker than it was before, you must replace it.

Vape liquids should taste and smell great when they are brand new. Flavors, on the other hand, degrade over time, changing their flavor or losing character components. If a vape juice no longer tastes like it did when you first tried it, the flavors have gone bad and it’s time to replace it.

As nicotine degrades, the amount of nicotine in the vape liquid decreases with time. Expired vape juice may not only taste bad, but it may also not meet your nicotine requirements.

How dangerous is it to use expired vape juice?

A couple of hits won’t kill you, and that’s how many vapers first learned there was something strange about their liquid. However, no research has been undertaken on the safety of expired vape juice. It’s unclear whether vaping expired juice is risky or what happens if you vape a lot of it. Nicotine and flavor are the two most degraded components of vape juice. As a result, you’re more likely to vape something that tastes unpleasant and doesn’t satisfy your requirements.

Store Vape Juice Correctly

The main thing is to keep it cool and dark. Cabinets and drawers located inside your home are the best storage solutions. Keeping the bottles in these conditions prolongs the life of the liquid. Make certain that the location where the liquid is stored is secure. E-liquids should not be kept outside, on window sills, or in warm, humid conditions. Also, do not keep them in the refrigerator. If you position them in certain locations, the liquid will disintegrate more quickly. Store the juice in a dark, cold, and dry place. A hermetically sealed bottle is preferable.
